Dopey Challenge Training – Weeks 26 & 27

The final weeks of Dopey Challenge training were bad in terms of actual running, but good in terms of strength training. I did exactly what everyone says not to do and introduced a personal trainer to my routine! I got a good 4 pack deal at the gym we joined recently and was able to work on some of my weaknesses. My concern was mainly that I didn’t want to end up injured by the end of the four days of running. I’d been experiencing IT band pain at the ends of my long runs and I was concerned it would sideline me during the longer races. With the personal trainer, we worked on a lot of core and single leg exercises that would allow me to gain some muscular balance. Overall, I think it paid off because I didn’t have any issues during the challenge.

Monday 12/19: Rest

Tuesday 12/20: Onboarding Session at Lifetime
Just an introductory session with a personal trainer at Lifetime, to demonstrate machinery, answer questions, etc. Also a great opportunity for them to sell new members personal training packages, which I totally bought as I mentioned above.

Wednesday 12/21: 1.78 mi (35:43) 20:03 min/mi


Thursday 12/22: 2.84 mi (1:02:45) 22:02 min/mi


Friday 12/23: Personal Training
Warmed up on the elliptical for about 20 minutes then worked with the trainer on sled pushes, alternating waves with the heavy ropes, single leg deadlifts, and lots of core exercises!

Saturday 12/24: 11.97 mi (2:58:42) 14:56 min/mi

I was really done by mile 10 and really wanted to call Roswell to come pick me up, but decided I wasn’t going to be able to do that during the races, so I just walked the last two miles.

Later in that evening, we went downtown for dinner and to a holiday pop up bar – one of the bars was Stranger Things themed! After that we went to see the National Christmas tree by the White House.

Sunday 12/25:  Merry Christmas!

Total mileage for the week: 16.5 miles

Monday 12/26: 4.01 mi (51:16) 12:48 min/mi

Tuesday 12/27:  Personal Training
Warmed up on the elliptical for ten minutes, then worked on single legged squats, thread the needle side planks, core exercises with a pulley machine,

Wednesday 12/28: Rest

Thursday 12/29: Personal Training
Warmed up on the elliptical again, then started with farmer carries, and then more of the same exercises we’d been working on: single legged squats and deadlifts, core, etc.

Friday 12/30: Elliptical for 25 minutes

Saturday 12/31: 5.80 mi (1:19:30) 13:43 min/mi


Sunday 1/1:  Personal Training
Warmed up on the elliptical before the last PT session. We did a little boxing warm up with the heavy bag and dummy, which was nice because I was really worried about being sore going into race week. But the session wasn’t super intense, and I felt great the rest of the week.


Total mileage for the week: 9.8 miles
Total mileage for December: 89.84 miles
