Friday Five: 5 Things About Me

abm_1478266596.jpgJoining with the lovely ladies over at Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0 today and sharing 5 things about me! This was definitely harder than I thought, so you get two running related items and three random, but still oddly defining facts in my mind so I hope they’re interesting!

I’m recently returning to running after a break

When I started grad school in the fall of 2012, I was training for my first marathon as well as a four day hike on the Inca Trail. After I finished both of those, I stopped running as much. It got much harder to include running in my schedule since I was working full time, going to school two nights a week and completing homework assignments in my free time. In 2013, I got engaged and started planning a wedding, continued grad school including a two week class trip to Brazil, and completed a part time internship in the fall while still working full time – I ran 2 half marathons. In 2014, I got married and put my husband on a plane the very next day to spend the next 8 months living in different states while I finished grad school – I ran 1 half marathon. When I moved to Texas at the very end of 2014, I was looking forward to having time to start running again. But running in Texas was different and I never found the running community I’d had in Virginia, thanks to the PR Training programs I’d done and the community I’d found through Tumblr. I ran one 5k in 2015 with the same amazing woman I went to see run the Chicago marathon a few weeks ago. I wanted a change in 2016 and I like to make big dramatic statements when I make a change, so I registered for the Dopey Challenge during the WDW Marathon weekend. It’s an intense challenge that I look back/forward and think what did I get myself into. But I’m learning lessons about strength and humility and I hoping that this is the kick I needed to get back to where I was in 2012.

I’ve recently been selected as a Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run Race Ambassador

I have applied a few times before, but was not selected. So I was very excited and honored to have received a phone call from Kim, the social media coordinator (who also blogs herself over at Kim Runs Miles with Smiles). I have participated in the run for I believe four or five years, but have only run once! The first time I did anything with Cherry Blossom was volunteering with the credit union I worked for. A few years later, after I had started running, I ran what I consider my best race ever. Because it was my longest and fastest race. I ran an average pace of 9’54” for TEN miles. I’d run a few sub 30 minute 5Ks (which was a big deal for me), but this was one of those races where the conditions and my training were on point and I was able to achieve my reach goal. I don’t know that I’ll be able to PR next year, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity to try!

Please go check out all of the other amazing race ambassadors and social media team! I’m looking forward to meeting everyone at the Cherry Blossom Kick Off Party on November 18. PS: The lottery opens December 1!

I’m a really picky eater

My husband constantly makes fun of me for this. I’m very particular in what I eat and I rarely eat leftovers. However, I do feel like I’ve made strides in what I will eat compared to a few years ago – I guess my taste buds have matured. There are still a few things I do not like especially even after trying them with my mature taste buds; mushrooms, olives, hummus, asparagus, sweet potatoes to name a few.  One time at a party, someone put out what I thought was black bean dip – however, when I tried it, I found it was black olive hummus. It was a disaster.

I own three passports and each passport contains stamps from only one continent

I guess I have a tendency to travel to the same continent relatively close to each other. My first passport contains my trips to Ireland, Scotland and England. My second passport contains trips to Peru and Brazil. My current passport has our honeymoon trip to Netherlands, Belgium and France. Currently on my travel bucket list is Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam or an Alaskan Disney cruise.

I’ve gone to a Disney theme park at least once a year for the last four years

People ask how I can go back to Disney every year, but I just love it – it’s my happy place. I’m happy to make it my annual vacation, because I enjoy it so much. My husband describes a feeling that he gets when he first arrives in a city – like “ahh, home” and I’d never realized it until we were walking down Main Street USA of Disneyland that I understood that feeling. Believing in magic is important. I also love to include a RunDisney event as the focus of the trip, like my mother-daughter trip for the Princess Half or our family trip for the Dopey Challenge next year.

2009: Walt Disney World friend trip
2010: Walt Disney World for my 25th birthday
2013: Walt Disney World for Princess Half Marathon
2014: Walt Disney World family trip
2015: Disneyland for my 30th birthday
2016: Disneyland for our 2nd anniversary vacation
2017: Walt Disney World for the Dopey Challenge

I’ve always been a very picky eater too. I’m eating things now I wouldn’t have touched with a ten-foot pole, but there are certainly things that fall in that category. I don’t like hummus either, and I have tried it. Chick peas whole are fine, but not hummus.

True story: I’ve never been to Disney. ANY Disney. I know, right? We always went skiing! I have a feeling that I will need to wait until I have kids to go to Disney to actually enjoy it… although, who knows how much you REALLY enjoy it with kiddos!
Welcome back to running! Luckily, it seems like you have a past with running, so if you can stay on top of your PT and are conservative at all with your plan, you will do great!

In my last six Disney trips, there has only been one trip with children (the family trip with my nieces). Other than that, it’s all adults and I’d definitely say we had way more fun without kids!
      Thank you!

I love having leftovers – I try to make extra just to have them, but then my son raids them for a late-night snack! Congrats on being a race ambassador – looking forward to meeting you in person at the kick-off!

Oh my passport is certainly never full, I got my second one because my first one expired and my third one after I got married and changed my last name. My dream would be one of those people who have to apply for extra pages because they’re traveling so much!
